Writing Strategy -Looking ahead

Sometimes we get so bogged down in the process, it’s hard to see the end goal. World creation, characters, backstory, interactions, complications, rising action, climaxes, resolutions…it’s all so complicated, how can we ever think of anything else?

Compounding this problem is life. Job, kids, spouse, exercise, non-writing relaxation time (TV/movies/games), and that ultimate killer of productivity: sleep. With so little time to just sit and let the creative juices flow, who has the time to look ahead? To remember what the end-goal is?

For myself, I’ve written the vast majority of the first draft of my fantasy novel, but I need some inspiration for what’s next, and when it comes to publishing, there is no better resource out there than the Writer’s Market. Now, you can go out and buy this for $29.99 ($20.99 on their website at the time of this writing), or you can do what I did and check it out at your local library. Either way, if you haven’t flipped through this book, I strongly urge you do.

In addition to up-to-date listings on publishing houses big and small, there are a number of good articles on getting paid, modern-day publishing techniques and trends, and blogging (a kind of niche market, self-publishing). Looking through the list of all the publishing houses inspires me, encouraging me to get something substantial to one of these houses, and not just to see me name in print but to accomplish a life goal.

This year’s edition has topics on:

  • Finding Work (i.e. getting paid)
  • Contracts
  • Establishing a home office
  • Blogging basics (which I read in great detail)
